Cavan Horse Marketing Centre closed yet another year on a high note and are now working extremely hard to make 2005 outshine even more. It seems 2004 is just a distant memory but to look back over the year Cavan will be busy in trying to surpass it in 2005. The first International Performance sale of 2004 had a great bearing on how the sales year began when J. McDonnell sold a four-year-old bay filly 165cms to S. Endresen of Norway for e 12,000, at the same sale a seven-year-old bay mare 148cms pony fetched e 9,000 for M. O'Toole. The April and June sales followed the trend when a sevenyearold, bay colt 148cms pony sold to M. Rombouts of Belgium by W. Kennedy for e 9,400 and a four- year-old grey filly was bought by R. Kirkwood from Kennedy Equine for e 10,600. A special three-year-old sale held in conjunction with the August sale combined a threeyearold loose jumping competition which was an excellent success, with over 200 entries in the loose jumping competition competing for qualification into the special sale. The loose jumping heats were held over four nights prior to the sale, with the final being the night prior to the sale. This was an excellent opportunity for buyers and spectators to see the accomplishments of these qualifiers that were to be sold in the special sale the next day. There was a lot of anticipation about the special sale and it certainly didn't disappoint, a three year old 168cms bay gelding was sold by J. O'Sullivan to C. McMahon for e 17,000. The eagerly awaited National-Registered Irish Draught sale took its usual slot in early October and achieved a splendid clearance of 66 per cent, proof positive the esteem in which this breed is held. A two-year-old grey filly was the highest priced lot of the day at e 15,500 and a close second was a seven-year old grey broodmare 168cms at e 11,500. These were taken on by W. Santry and D. McCabe and put on the market by Carrabeg Stud and J. Lee. The two days following saw the first young stock sale of 2004, which followed in the footsteps of the RID sale by achieving a 55 per cent clearance. A six-year-old broodmare at e 9,000 and a chestnut filly foal sold at e 7,000 were the stars of this sale. A four day November sale comprising of a young stock sale on the first two days and the last two day international performance sale of 2004 finished the sales year with great excitement, when R. Kenny's fouryearold Voltaire horse topped the sale at e 19,000 which was sold to J. Derwin. There will be six International-Performance sales bi-monthly through 2005, February, April, June, August, October and November. The August sale will include a special three year old sale which will be run on the same lines as 2004 with four qualifying rounds prior to the sale culminating in the final the evening prior to the sale. The National Registered Irish Draught sale will again fill its slot in early October followed by the first young stock sale of the year while the second young stock sale will be in November. Cavan is proceeding with it's plan of doing it's utmost in offering plenty of variety to both vendor and buyer while at the same time not compromising on quality and professionalism. The 2005 sales year starts at Cavan on Wednesday 23, and Thursday, February 24, with a two-day International Performance sale, please contact the centre at 00 353 49 4332017 for a catalogue.
