At Spruce Meadows, there was a win in the $60,000 Great West Life Cup at the Canada One and a 3rd in the $50,000 Direct Energy Cup at the North American. Their stellar year was capped off with a 2nd in the $15,000 International Welcome at the Royal Winter Fair Horse Show in Toronto, Ontario. Black Ice; b1995; TB/Dutch warmblood cross; gelding; took a long time to mature but, pardon the pun, has now really hit his stride; 2007 at HITS Thermal they placed 4th in a $30,000 Ariat Grand Prix and 6th in a $75,000 Footing Authority Grand Prix. Heading north, they took 2nd in the $50,000 ESSO Challenge at Spruce Meadow’s Canada One, a 1st in the $175,000 Chrysler Classic Derby at the Spruce Meadows North American, and won the first leg of the John Deer Canada Cup Championships at Tournament of Champions, Palgrave, Ontario. Callisto; b1993; TB cross by Charon; mare; strong mare with tonnes of natural ability; 2007 they placed 6th in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix at HITS Thermal, California and 3rd in the $30,000 Ariat GP at HITS Thermal. Lamaze, Eric Born in Montreal in 1968, his long-time home is Torrey Pines in Schomberg, Ontario. In 1988 Hickstead; b1996; KWPN; stallion; by Hamlet; started the 2007 season by placing 4th in the $300,000 CN Worldwide Grand Prix at Wellington, Florida. Returning to Canada, he took part in the Spruce Meadows series of tournaments. They placed 3rd in the $60,000 Great West Life Cup at the Spruce Meadows Canada One, 1st in the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup, 2nd in the $50,000 Direct Energy Cup and 1st in the $30,000 Enerflex Cup at the Spruce Meadows North American. At the Pan American Games, Lamaze and Hickstead won individual bronze and team silver. Back in western Canada, there was a 1st in the $75,000 Keg GP at Thunderbird Summer Festival and an uber-exciting win in the $1 million CN International at the Spruce Meadows Masters. Hickstead had colic surgery at the end of the year but proved he has recovered completely by winning the $75,000 Palm Beach Equine Clinic GP in Wellington, Florida early in 2008. Narcotique de Muze II; b1997; Belgian bred; mare; 2007 placed 1st in the $35,000 Pengrowth Cup at SM North American; 2nd in the $50,000 Sea to Sky GP and in the $25,000 High Friday Night GP at Fort Langley Summer Classic; 2nd in the $75,000 Keg GP and 1st in the $25,000 Tommy Bahama GP at Thunderbird Summer Festival; 1st in the $25,000 National Show Jumping Championship (Phase One) in Wellington, Florida; 2nd in the $50,000 Weston Canadian Open and 2nd in the $25,000 National Steel Car Four Bar at the Royal. Millar, Ian Born 1947 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Millar started riding in Edmonton, Alberta in 1957. He was In Style; b1995; Holsteiner; gelding by Acord II; this tall, sensitive horse rides more like a thoroughbred than the warmblood he is; 2007 the pair were members of the winning Nations Cup Team at Wellington, Florida. They won the Open Welcome and the $50,000 Classic I @ Palgrave Grand Prix in Caledon, Ontario. They were members of the silver medal winning team at the PanAm Games in Rio. Back in Canada, they placed 2nd in the Open Welcome at Classic @ Palgrave I, 1st in the $50,000 Miele Grand Prix at Collingwood, 2nd in the $60,000 Kubota Cup at Collingwood, 1st in the $30,000 Zeidler Financial Cup at Spruce Meadow’s Masters, and 1st in the $50,000 Weston Canadian Open at the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto, Ontario. Millar, Jonathon Born 1974, this member of the Millar clan began riding at age 8 but only took up the sport Fancy Hill; b1995; German-bred; mare; by For Pleasure; 2007 they won the Open Welcome Stake and placed 3rd in the $35,000 Empire State GP in North Salem, NY. In Quebec, Canada, Millar had an outstanding season. 1st in both the Open Jumper Welcome and the $25,000 Grand Prix, Summer Classic I, Ste. Justine-de-Newton. In the Summer Classic II, it was a 3rd in the $25,000 Grand Prix. Moving on to Blainville, Millar and Fancy Hill placed 2nd in the $50,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec and 1st in the $20,000 Open Welcome. The final stop on their tour of Quebec saw the pair place 4th $60,000 Kubota Cup, Bromont International, Bromont, Quebec. By year end, Millar and Fancy Hill were 2nd Overall in the Kubota Cup Eastern Conference and in the Canadian National Show Jumping Championship, Toronto. Chianto; b1996; Danish-bred; gelding; 2007 this pair also enjoyed great success in Quebec with a 1st in the Open Jumper, Summer Classic I, Ste. Justine-de-Newton, a 2nd in the $25,000 Grand Prix, Summer Classic II, Ste. Justine-de-Newton, a 3rd in the $70,000 World Cup Qualifier, Blainville, and a 3rd in the Modified Grand Prix, Bromont. Pearce, John Born in Toronto in 1960, Pearce makes his home at Forest View Farms in Stouffville, Ontario. Archie Bunker; b1998; Oldenburg, gelding; this easy to ride “Cadillac” of a horse has a lot of heart and has proven this again and again in the ring. 2007 placed 1st and 3rd in two $75,000 Footing Authority Grand Prix at HITS Thermal, California; 1st in the $20,000 Open Welcome and 4th in the $100,000 World Cup Qualifier at Summer Festival, Palgrave. The 2008 season has started on a high with a 2nd in the $125,000 Grand Prix and a 1st in the $50,000 Purina Mills GP at HITS Thermal, California. Urioso; 1997; Belgian; this gelding has an unorthodox jumping style but is very powerful; 2007 placed 2nd in the $50,000 EMO GP at HITS Thermal, California; 1st in the $150,000 Cessna Aircraft GP at HITS Dessert Circuit and 2nd in the first leg (speed) of the John Deer Canada Cup Championships at T of C. Underhill, Beth http://www.bethunderhill.com/index.htm Born in 1962 in Guelph, Underhill grew up in Uxbridge, Ontario. She started riding in 1969 at Magdaline; b1994; mare; 16.2hh; Dutch warmblood; 2007 Underhill showed mainly in the United States. They placed 2nd in a $25,000 Footing Authority GP at HITS Ocala, Florida, 1st in the $50,000 EMO GP at HITS Post Time Farm, Ocala, 2nd in the $100,000 Footings Authority GP, 1st in the $50,000 Ocala SJ Classic, 2nd in the $10,000 Open Welcome and 3rd in the $30,000 Lamplight GP; 2nd in the $35,000 GP in Vermont. Back home, they were 3rd in the $60,000 Kubota GP and in the $125,000 CN Grand Prix in Bromont, Quebec, and 1st in the $40,000 Kubota Cup Eastern Conference Finale at the Maritime Fall Fair, Halifax, Nova Scotia. That win was particularly sweet as it marked the 20th anniversary of Underhill’s first grand prix victory. Vince, Ainsley http://www.lindenridge.ca/ Born in 1976, Ainsley is the eldest of three show-jumping Vince women: Ainsley, Courtney, and Canterro Z; b1999; this scopey gelding by the great stallion Cumano arrived at Linden Catch 22; at age 17, “Telly”, a fan favourite, is still going strong. This Dutch warmblood by Notaris placed 2nd in the $60,000 TransCanada Parcours de Chasse at the SM National; 3rd in the $20,000 Molson Cup at the SM Continental; won the $20,000 Open Welcome at Blainville and was 3rd in the $20,000 Open Welcome at Blainville II. Ones to Watch in 2008 Ballard, Erynn http://erynnballard.com/ Born in 1980, Ballard was raised in the saddle. Mother, Sandi, runs the highly successful Looking Back Stables. Farther, David, is an international FEI O level course designer. And her paternal grandfather, Lt. Bob Ballard, was a member of the Canadian military show jumping team from 1947 to the mid 1950s. Ballard is a versatile catch rider for both hunters and jumpers. A former Maclay Medal winner and gold medalist at the NAYRC, as an adult Ballard continues to stay steadily at the top of the rankings, no matter what ring she is riding in. In 2006 she was voted Equine Canada’s Equestrian of the Year. While Ballard has a number of talented prospects in her stables, it’s Robin Van Roosendael that retains the #1 spot. Robin Van Roosendael; b1994; Belgian warmblood; by Skippy II. The 17.3hh gelding developed an unlikely partnership with Ballard starting in October 2003. This horse loves work and dislikes any time off. In 2007 the pair were members of the winning Nations Cup Team at Wellington, Florida and placed 2nd in the $100,000 CN World Cup Qualifier at The Royal. Moffatt, Hyde Born in 1979 in Port Hope, Ontario, Andrew “Hyde” Moffatt now makes his home in Brantford.
